Powder Horn #14
« on: April 29, 2022, 04:01:48 AM »
I just finished this horn last night and thought I would share some pictures in this forum. It is a lobed one and I wasn't sure just how I was going to do the scrimshaw designs on it. After hours doing the various border designs, I decided to do a map of the Chesapeake Bay on the facing side.  When it was done I was at a loss to decide what to do on the obverse side. For hours I mulled and drew and nothing came to me.
Finally, after dinner, it came- do a boat! I hadn't done one before but got some pictures of schooners and did this one. It is a fictional boat; I named the Schooner "The Mary See" using my kids' names: Mary and Christian (C, his first initial for "See") Hence Mary See. If I had a boat, I would definitely name her the "Mary See".

Nicely done.  The lobe and fitted base plug really enhance the antique appearance.

Thanks! It’s strange but for me one of the the biggest challenges is selecting the designs and subjects to scrimshaw. Sometimes it just comes to me. But often there’s a long time of indecision of what seems “ right” when it finally just hits me and I like how it came out, like the sun design on horn #13 or this simple Schooner. These things take their own road when the decorations start. The most frustrating thing is not having a subject that suits your fancy , though it’ll come to you in its own time.
