Is this a Martin Sr or Martin Jr build? I have an ancestor who lived in Harrisburg and fought in the revolution, likely with a gun made by shell Sr!

It’s not a screwup if it can be fix. Nice inletting job on the wearplate. Killer piece of wood too.

Sorry, it’s been while since I posted on this build. I finally got to get back to it, hopefully I will get it finished. I engraved the cheek piece star today and decided to change from the usual designs that are typically used and added a flower. What do you think?

I engraved this cheek piece off of the rifle. It is much easier to engrave anything off of the rifle if possible, simply because you do not have the rifle in the way and it is easier to turn the piece you are working on. I an fixing to engrave the patch box and I will post pictures of that process.

Engraving inlays before inletting them, how do you get the inlay edges flush with the wood without messing up the engraving? Just inlet it perfectly? Inlet and file flush, then remove it and engrave it?

I fit the inlay to the stock first, then remove the inlay for engraving. You have to do a good fit up first or this will not work. I can engrave inlays and parts on the gun and I do this quite often. It's just a little more cumbersome to engrave parts on the rifle. Many of our beloved early rifle that are engraved were engraved with the parts off of the rifle, many were not. It is PC to go either way. Some rifles had both on an off of the rifle engraving. For me I will engrave as much as possible off the rifle.

I have finished the engraving on this project. The patch box, toe plate and cheek piece star were engraved off the gun. The forearm wear plate was engraved on the gun. I got the carving started and will hopefully finish this project in a couple of weeks.

Well I got the cheek side carving just about done, it still needs a lot of clean up. But I have done all I can do today. Cleanup on isle 4 will start tomorrow.

I am finally getting close to finishing this project. Here are a few photos of the stock with color and finish on it. I have the engraving done on all the parts except the entry pipe. I should have this project finished right after Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone and a happy New Year.
