Finished Jim Chambers PA Fowler
« on: May 15, 2022, 05:20:49 PM »
Here are some pics of my Jim Chambers PA Fowler I just finished up. I started this build in June of 2021 after I picked up my Kit from Jim and Barbie at the NMLRA nationals in Friendship IN. It has been a great experience and I have learned so many new skills during this project. This is my first time doing any carving (so go easy on me). I owe a lot to my friend and mentor Jeff Talbert. I visited his shop on many occasions where he taught and guided me through some of the more difficult parts of the build. Dave Person has also been a great resource with his extensive knowledge of these early smoothbore fowlers.

I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Jim Chambers PA Fowler:
20g/.62 caliber
Maple
7lbs
Finished with two coats of Iron Nitrate, one coat of Laurel Mountain Forge Honey Maple, Jim Chambers gunstock oil.
The iron has been French Greyed with Jax Brass Black.
The powder horn is made by my hand.
The shooting pouch was made by Dennis Massie.

That’s a fine Fowler, nicely done!  Those Chambers Fowler kits make nice guns and you did it justice.  I think your molding and beavertails look fine.  The carving behind the tang is simple and appropriate for an American piece.  With some more experience and practice, I’d encourage you to try adding some more detail to your carving.  It’ll come with time and practice, and I hope you’ll be doing more projects.  Also, at least for me, I would have placed the pins for the rear of the guard a tad lower.  Great job on all the metal finishing, and also the stock finishing!  Again, nice job, and a fine looking Fowler, thanks for posting!  Best,

Thank you Ed and thank you for the feedback! I do plan to build more and continue to learn and hone my skills. I have already sourced all the parts to do a build from a blank.

Very nicely done H.Jack. Those Fowler's are REALLY good shooters with a patched ball.

That's some real nice work, especially for first time carving.  You are only going to go upward from here, and you have some great mentors in Jeff and Dave.  Keep up the good work!

Your fowler looks wonderful! It's been great watching you progress through the build.
I recall one of your posts where you were mulling over not doing the carving. What a good decission to go forward and do them.  It's a proud man's gun you have there Hatchet Jack  ;)
