Earlier in the year I had posted about the poor state of muzzle loading guns being used by our local 4-H youth shooting sports club. They shoot here on my range each Tuesday through the spring and summer months. The best guns that they could muster were plastic half stock department store guns or in-line deer guns. These things were hard for the kids to shoot and unreliable at best. I decided to put together something better for them to try.
With the generous help from ALR members Austin and J Talbert and some wheeling and dealing with Jim Chambers Flintlocks I was fortunate enough to get 3 nice guns together.
One rifle is a stick build 45, the other two are Chambers Little Feller’s kits in 50 cal. I opted to put set triggers in all three guns. Set triggers were something totally new to the kids as were the flintlocks.
We had our first session yesterday. After very little range time these kids had their guns shooting in the black and each one had at least one in the 10 ring.
 Here are the shooters!

 Here are the rifles.

I hope that someday one of the kids that go through the muzzle loading part of 4-H down here gets hooked on our sport the way that I am!!

Good job. I'm sure those kids were delighted. It would be great to see this happen more often, it's good and maybe the parents will take an active role. How old were these youngsters?

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Good job. The hunter safety class's I used to teach did somewhat the same thing and in over 20 + years we have at least three now devoted ML shooters. Maybe not a lot but more is better even if the numbers are small.

Great Job Wayne, Austin, and Jeff! Are the 3 guns enough or do you have plans to make more?

So cool to see things like this.  The results will last a lifetime.  I STILL remember my very first flintlock shot I fired.  Been hooked since.  That was 36 yrs ago.  Great job!

Fine doing and good guns will encourage these youngsters and kept their interest higher than the junkers you described.
The clunkers will guarantee a loss of interest and an adult disdain for the sport and that we do NOT need when you consider
the fossilization of some of us.I am 86 and there are a few here older that that. I know Herb is,

Wayne,
That is GREAT! thanks to all those contributing to the cause and especially with items that fit the shooters they were intended for. Nothing harder than trying to teach with something too big or too small for the students. Looks like you also get another kudos for it looks like getting the ladies involved. it is a wonderful thing you did for those kids and for the future of muzzleloading. Hats off to you and all the sponsors!

I agree with everyone that this is a wonderful thing and most probably something these youngsters will remember for a good long time. I can imagine the proud feelings you all had in seeing how well they did. When students succeed it’s because everyone was involved. Congratulations!
