Where to Find Gourds For Accouterments?
« on: May 16, 2022, 08:02:51 PM »
I thought the question would fit better here. TC

Gourds were common powder storage containers seen with cloth covered corn cob stoppers.

Does anyone know where to find some of the small gourds like the OP has shown.   I think they are pretty neat way to carry shot or powder.

It seems that the last time i posted on ALR about the small bottle gourds was about 12 years ago. I still have some of those gourds so I cut open and planted some. We shall see if they come up but im kinda doubtful

To  order a $6.00 small gourd it cost a flat rate shipping of $15.00.  Where is it going to stop.
I might be able to find some local at farmers market.  I use to raise gourds for Martins to nest in.  If a person cut one when small and let dry it should make a good one for shot or powder.  Bigger they get the easyer to crack.

I was raised by my grandmother down in Georgia.  She not only had gourds growing in the garden but one could sometimes run upon gourd vines in the woods.  Don't seem to be any around nowadays.

I grew some of those gourds a few years ago for decorations, bird houses, etc. It is best to grow them on a trellis or fence.  Also if you affix a board on either side of the gourd when its small it will be grow flat like a flask....LK

20 years or so ago we had a row of hemlocks growing in our back yard. they were only about 12 -15 feet tall and they were afflicted with some hemlock blight. The trees were over grown with bittersweet and they formed a screen between our yard and the neighbors' My wife had bought a package of gourd seeds, thinking they were something els and she 'threw them away' into the hemlock line. The trees were covered in bittersweet and no one even looked at them, but that fall when the vines died off, the trees showed dozens of gourds all different colors and sizes. Plant some seeds and wait for the end of summer. If you grow them intentionally you can shape them by lightly pressing them as they grow.
