Green Painted Horn W/Bands '22
« on: May 21, 2022, 12:37:25 AM »
It is about 14" around the outside curve and 12 tip-to-tip. The butt is Walnut, about 2 1/4" wide. The base is threaded 1/2-8 and pinned to the horn with three wooden pegs. The threaded dowel was turned from Hickory and is pinned into the end cap with an Iron nail. The tip is make up of two pieces of Antler, the tip portion is pinned to the collar piece with three wooden pegs, three more hold it to the horn. The bands were boiled in Brown dye, pressed on while hot and secured with three Iron pins each. The color on the horn is three coats of Green Milk Paint sand down with 240 between coats. The last was rubbed out with a piece of Brown paper bag. The horn and bands were coated with Brown shoe polish and buffed with a brush and rags.

Dang Tim,

That is one outstanding horn.  Love the color, the contrast and the turnings.  Seriously Cool pretty much sums it up.

Tim,

There's a lot going on with this horn.  Looks great.  Thanks for sharing the photos.

I like that shape and color.
Interesting that you use shoe polish rather than paste wax for your finishes. Is there an advantage?

I don't know that there is an advantage. Paste wax to me give a bit more shine than I'm looking for. Shoe polish will at first but seems to go to a mat finish as it ages, it also give a little color and brings out fine lines in tips , bands and basses.
