You can inlay dead soft brass wire into the gouges and re-cut them.
I can send you a piece if you decide to go that way.

Heat it up, flux it, And " tin " over the border with silver solder then lightly sand over that leaving the silver in the cuts.

when I make a error like this there are usually two options. You can try to pen the area around the cut back into itself and then sand or burnish  If that dosent work I usually try to make it look like it belongs that  way .  Be creative. You can cut a beveled border around the whole thing and add a shadow line next to it.

Don't worry about it.There are NO golden oldies that are perfect or anywhere near it.I made a lot of locks and not one of them was perfect but all functioned as they should.I dabbled
 a bit in engraving but a badly broken wrist on the right ended the excursion into the finer arts.

Just a bit of peening in the right direction. Agree with Eric. Nice work. They weren't perfect just looked good at a distance

If it were me (and it often is), I would re-cut the curved border lines a little heavier and then put a second parallel line outside of that.  Both would distract from the very slight imperfection you have there.  Here is a box I did for one of my rifles that had a similar problem at the top end of the box lid.

davec2  great recovery on the border.  At times we have to do what a magician does and rely on distraction to cover up what they are really doing.  Remember also that not all mistakes are bad. What you learn in covering them up forces you to learn something new. I  remember a friend once saying."I never make a mistake. I do however have lapses of better judgement."

I'd make the left side as deep as the right side and fill it in with stippling dots.

My engraving is completely unlike Dave's. I don't use a microscope, just reading glasses and a hammer and chisel. I've always been fine with the results.
 I really enjoy all the very good engraver's work these days, it's very nice. But it can look odd on copies of 18th century guns. That's fine too if you're into that sort of thing.

Just curious as to what he did..
