checkering hammer

Wanting to checker the hammer spur on a percussion Hawken lock. Was thinking of getting a checkering file and filing a full depth diamond pattern on the convex of spur and fade it out towards the back edge of spur. Maybe use a graver to even up the sides? anyone have any advice?

You might be able to google checkering hammer spurs and get the one that Taylor did. He posted really good pictures of it.

That didn't work.

I think he did this with a 32 lpi checkering file from Brownell's.

If you decide to go ahead with this, practice on flat surfaces first, but be sure to practice on curved surfaces like a hammer.  It’s a hole different ball game doing the curved surface.  But, it’s not hard to do!

Exactly, however the file has 42 lines per inch, not 32.
It gives a very grippy feeling, without cutting the thumb
which sharp coarse filing can do, after a while.

I think my checkering files are coarser,maybe 16 LPI.My pattern which was seldom the same thing twice is much more aggressive than the pattern shown here.I haven't done one since 2019.I was a bit more cautious on the Alex Henry Hammers and they did look good and did
 traction.I have on rare occasions checkered the lower edge of a front trigger sorta like a European trigger I once examined.
These were 20 LPI and if someone wants it on a Hawken trigger it takes all of 5 minutes or less to do before I harden it..No extra cost but it ain't traditional either.Front trigger only.
