Last day jake
« on: May 31, 2022, 04:30:19 PM »
This is my first year turkey hunting period and therefore first in Vermont. Got a last day jake with my .69 New England fowler based on a restocked 1728 fusil ordinaire. 1.5 oz of shot Skychief style. Flattened him at 28 paces. Last day of the season. I must have 40 hours into this scrawny bird. Worth it. Beautiful mornings.

Good for you Rich. I never made it this year, either too wet or other things took precedent! Our season went out May 14

Congrats! From the looks of where you hunt, it was a successful season weather or not you filled your tag.

Great photos, Thanks for sharing. Any legal turkey is a trophy in my mind.
I have shot some Monster Toms and quite a few Jakes and plan on continuing to do so.
Nothing beats walking out with a long gun in one hand and a turkey in the other.

Good hunting.  How did you manage to keep track of that scrawny Jake in the midst of the beautiful countryside?

I had one check out my 20ga and gave his approval on a Bobby Hoyt 51in barrel.

A bird in the hand, as they say. Beautifull country, love the photos. How is the tick situation up there?

I’d say the ticks are not as prevalent as around St. Louis, MO, at least this year, but I’ve been careful. I’ve found one on me now and then, still crawling, but not many. Will see what mid summer brings. Few black flies and mosquitos too. Spring has been dry.

Interesting.
Down here in Connecticut, I'm having a horrible spring with ticks. Can't ever remember them being this bad. I've been through 4 of the big cans of Sawyer Permethrin spray already. If there is a chance an article of clothing might get worn on a quick hike, a scout, or hunt, it gets sprayed down. Also did the seats and carpet in my truck.

Those little red efts sure are cute. They are so incredibly docile, I've never seen one scurry away or quickly bury itself in the leaf litter on approach.

As I said elsewhere, congratulations and great job on both the bird and the gun.

Brokennock, you’ve got some beautiful country there (seen on Instagram). Would have thought Michigan, Wisconsin, and so on.

Thanks. Yes, it's beautiful here. A lot to offer in natural resources/topography for such a small state. Sadly, it is very difficult to live here.

Great pictures Rich and congrats on the bird.  I was at my cabin in Rochester, Vt about 60 miles north of you and it was beautiful on the 31st.  June 1st, it started pouring and the no see ums showed up, so we headed for home early.  June in Vermont can get really buggy.
