Chambers New England Fowler butt plate.

Newbie here just wondering how you would approach this. Does the butt plate need to be shaped? Do I just start hacking wood away to match the curve of the butt plate?

My choice would depend on the pitch you want. But I’d not inlet it till you decide whether to remove a quarter inch or more at the heel or bend the buttplate.

Kind of like the way it shoulders now might do a little of both.

Pull the toe of the bp out a bit. Then straight down then forward

Hi,
Anneal the plate and pull the toe out so it looks more like this.

You can aneal  it but you won't need to.

I think Smart dog (Dave) may have a free tutorial on installing butt plates like yours on the forum.

Hi Mike,
I think you are mostly right about annealing but the last 2 wax-cast butt plates I installed, including the one I show above, would not budge without annealing. To be honest, I really prefer sand cast plates.

You might pull out the toe a little one more time.

Rt5403,

Rich Pierce mentions deciding what pitch you want.  Here is a discussion where Taylor talks about pitch, it has some good information to consider about pitch https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=30988.25

I just did the same one. My first inclination was to try and bend the toe out a bit, but I chickened out. I was afraid the edges would crack since it’s slightly concave. I ended up setting the top tang flat and scribing a pencil line where to cut off the wood at the bottom. I second Mike’s recommendation- inlet straight down, then forward. Went really well. After reading the post link above regarding pitch, I’m hoping I didn’t create a cheek slapping 10ga. Might be worth trying to bend some to keep it more square to your shoulder.
