Patchbox Question
« on: June 27, 2022, 06:42:00 PM »
Hello everyone,

RCA #139 has a unique patch box release spring.  It is not a button release and it is not the full length spring like on Lehigh or some Christian Springs rifles.
The image is not really clear about what it is.  Has anyone seen it in person or familiar with how it might be set up?

I know this one because I have an original with the same type of release. It is nothing more than  L shape spring with one part of the lower leg sharpened and driven into the end grain the other end has the hook to catch the paul riveted to the lid. there is an extension as apart of the hook part that pierces through the slot in the butt plate. I have seen one variation of this and the  spring is actually rivited to the butt plate. The head on the spring release may have been rivited inplace then the spring fed through the slot then riveted to the butt plate.

How do you get it to work

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

"How do you get it to work".  Just take the butt plate off.   Seriously, like Mr Brooks, I cannot see the release mechanism. Is it on the Butt plate ?
kind regards, heinz

There’s a small tab, at the top of the catch, that extends through a slot in the buttplate.

Thanks, I guess you said that in the first post if I would have read it correctly.  That is really an extremely simple approach.
kind regards, heinz

Dave B,
Do you by chance have a photo of the release that goes through the buttplate? It would help to see how the release ties in with the release mechanism under the buttplate. Thanks.
