« on: July 17, 2022, 05:24:19 AM »
Hello,
I'm Christian from Germany and I'm new to the forum. As introduction I want to show you my flintlock smoke poles. All 4 are built from kits by myself.
From top to bottom:
Kibler's Southern Mountain Rifle, .40 cal, fancy maple
Pedersoli Indian Trade Musket, 20ga/.62 cal, figured walnut
Lyman's (Investarms) Great Plains Rifle, .45 cal., walnut
Pedersoli Scout, .45 cal, walnut

Hi Christian,
Welcome!  Nice group of guns and I like the job you did on that trade gun.

Willcommen Christian! Yes, that Pedersoli musket sure has some fine-looking wood. Like the tang sight on the Lyman. How far a distance are you shooting it?

Thank you all for the warm welcome.
Mostly I shoot at 55 yards (50m), but a few times I went to the 110 yards lane of the local range with the Great Plains Rifle.

Welcome to the forum. Is black powder hard to get where you're at? Any restrictions on black powder guns?

Mike, thank you for your welcome,
As always in Germany, it gets complicated when guns are involved.
I try to explain the situation briefly.
Concerning the powder:
The availability of black powder is good. Percussion caps are on shortage as everywhere.
To purchase powder you need a permit. Permits are given to members of gun or reenactment clubs only.
Concerning the guns:
Guns with spark ignition (match lock, wheel lock, flintlock) are free for adults, no matter if double or single barreled.
Guns with percussion locks are free as long as they are single barreled. Double barrel caplock guns or revolvers are restricted to holders of a special permit.

Welcome Grischi , hope you find this group to your liking . I spent some time in Germany and enjoyed it a lot. Good luck in your muzzleloading hobby. I'm a little confused about your shooting range of 55 yds. I had thought it would be less than 100 M  Typo maybe. ;)

Thank you.
Typical ranges are 25m (pistols) and 50 or 100m for long guns.
And yes, 50m is equal to 55 yards. (Corrected it in my post above)

Grischi,

I live in Italy part time . I was unaware that one was allowed to build kits in Germany ,just finished guns or guns made by master gunsmiths.

What are the proof laws in Germany regarding a kit ?

Would be pleased to hear back .

Regards Stuart

Grischi;

I love your tradegun, but I have a question. That Lott lock is obviously from the same pattern that has been around for years. Is the mainspring strong enough? And is the frizzen hardened correctly?
Years ago when Green River Forge and Northstar were making trade guns with that lock people were paying me to switch them out for better aftermarket locks of similar shape.
If the newer locks have correct springs, and frizzens, I will contact the manufacturer and see if they will sell me a few. I have several of the older version that could be used if I could get the correct parts.
 Welcome to the dog fight.

Martin,

the springs and the frizzen seem to be ok. It sparks well. But I'm not sure if I can recommend to buy some. Compared to the SMR and even to the Scout this lock seems to be a bit slower. If you cock and decock it by hand, you can literally feel the friction of the moving parts. I think I will disassemble it and polish the contact surfaces to improve that.
