I want to show my Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle kit .40 cal. stocked in fancy maple. I assembled and finished it literally at the kitchen table.
I'm no professionel gun maker and the kit is my 3rd project and by far the most authentic gun I've built so far.
The preshaping and fit of the parts impressed me a lot.
It was much fun to build this gun. I finished it with aqua fortis and Bone Black. The ageing with Bone Black was a little bit tricky and in the vids it looks much easier than it actually is. But im quite satisfied with the results.
I've built the gun with some extras:
- an iron nose cap
- a toe plate
- a custom made side plate
- a sleeved entry pipe
- a custom shaped bean style patch box

Hello, I am putting a Kibler southern mountain rifle together on My kitchen table right now, may I ask what you used to color your barrel/process?
It is very close to the color I want, I may wish to go slightly lighter color and I imagine I can get that by rubbing back just a bit more.
Also if you could link what nose cap you used? that would be great! Thanks for posting your rifle.

You've found the right type of cap. I ordered two sizes: MC-SC-12-I and MC-SC-13-I. I'm actually not sure which size I used, sorry.
The barrel and all other metal parts have been treated with Birchwood Casey's brass black and rubbed back with 0000 steel wool.

From all my kit guns so far the SMR has been the most easy assembly with the most period correct appearance.
The acknowledgements should go to Kibler's Longrifles first for the high quality kit as well as for his support videos on Youtube. I just managed to not messing it up while assembling it.

Make it a 45 and it would be a great rifle for hunting Wyoming and Montana!!! I just love it and now contemplating another rifle.

I like it to. Most Kibler SMR's either have no muzzle cap, or a few poured Pewter caps I have seen.
I admit I prefer the clean look of no cap, however I can see the benefits of the protection. I think what I don't like is a lot of brass on a rifle ( I believe I am in the minority on this)....I have to admit I really like the muzzle cap in iron!
I am not yet convinced I will put an iron cap on my .32 kibler SMR, but I have ordered the TOTW iron cap and will modify it to be as slender as I can make it, if it comes out well I may inlet it on.
If you get a chance, could you show a photo of the rifle muzzle cap from the bottom with the ramrod removed? I am wondering if the cap puts a little side load on the rod ? Or is it slender enough to clear the rod fully?

The cap doesn't really interfere with the ramrod. It touchs the rod just slightly. No additional force to the rod. Here are two close ups of the cap.

IMHO the ram rod should be snug to either the nose cap or the bare wood. Any gap gets more unsightly as the gap widens. This an Excellent job. Well done!

Going alone with the crowd on this. As nice as any I have seen, maybe the best. Great finish on the metal. And the patch box is super. Larger than most in width but positioned in the perfect spot makes all the lines of the stock flow perfectly.
