A friend of mine is having trouble with his back and hips and has a hard time shooting his heavy longrifles. I just happened to have a Rice 30" 40cal swamped squirrel barrel and figured that would make a dandy little lightweight rifle for him. I threw on a Liston Rice Nock lock, his double set triggers and a slender Virginia style trigger guard and buttplate. The stock is quarter sawn curly ash that I got from Tom Fornicola (great guy to deal with by the way) that was too short for a typical longrifle but too long for a halfstock, just perfect though for this project. It weighed in at 4lbs 11oz and the overall length is 45". The stock grain was filled with ebony Good Filla grain filler sanded back then stained with LMF Nut Brown. Stock finish is a mixture of tung oil, semi-gloss polyurethane and mineral spirits. It was rubbed back with rottenstone then waxed. Furniture is rust blued.

Taylor, the LOP is 13.5". I was going to make it a little shorter, but that would have shortened the buttplate and thrown off the look I was trying to get.

johnfolchetti, The buttplate is one I had laying around. I think I got it from MBS. The length is 5" and I believe the width was 1.5". I cut about an inch off the top tang. The longer tang just didn't look right.

Thanks for posting this. When you have those kinds of anatomy problems you feel every ounce.

The best I've been able to do on my Transitionals and Jaegers is about 7 pounds, so you're a bloody miracle...
