First one, Kibler Colonial
« on: April 29, 2022, 03:43:21 AM »
Just finished my first one. Learned a lot.  My vision for the browning didn't happen, my learning curve issues, so went with the 'patina-ed' look.  Used sal alminac, cupric sulphite in distilled water.  Tannic acid, ferric sulphite in distilled for the wood.  Decided to 'Antiqued' the brass to match the way things were going, used Jax Black for brass.  Added the toe plate and patch box end plate as after thoughts, before staining of course.  There's some nicks and blemishes from a first timer but they'll become part of it as it ages I suspect.  Four whiskerings, tannic acid, a whiskering, ferric nitrate treatment, two sloppy coats of 50/50 turpentine and tung oil, sand back and five hand rubbed tung oil treatments.  Some touch up and a waxing to do and then off to the range for load development.  many thanks to Jim Kibler, advice and posts here from you folks, RH Mccrory books, William Buchele book, google and you tube I managed to get it done.

1st rifle? Looks fine to me, you should be proud of it as I am sure you are.

Sorry Frankie, not been on here a lot lately.  Hours into it: 30 for fitting it, lots of back and forth to Jim's videos and other refs, I took it slow. Finishing likley as much, or more, being my first time doing all these processes.  I tend to also over think things sometimes though.  In the end, worth every hour🙂.

Kibler kits are great.I like the clean look of this one. Though I have to admit that the nicely carved builds attract me too.
