Powder Horn Lettering
« on: August 08, 2022, 03:10:50 AM »
Does anyone know of a good website showing 18th Century lettering or lettering typically
used on powder horns?

I’ve done web-searches but the results I get don’t really look like the lettering I see on
antique or contemporary powder horns.

Thanks

Dave

In the books I have, most of the lettering was block lettering, with a mixture of all caps and upper and lower case.  All caps seems to be more prevalent, maybe because it was easier to do.  Pictures of professionally made horns of the period also show both forms of lettering, but non block (more like cursive lettering) lower case may have been used more, possibly due to their skill level.

On page 89 of Sibley's "Recreating The 18th Century Powder Horn" examples of the alphabet and numbers are shown.

If I could invest in 1 book it would be this one, and I have quite a few. It's not getting any cheaper like everything else but just my .02. Good luck - Aaron

I also recommend George Bickham"s 'Penmanship Made Easy'.  Not expensive either.

My favorite lettering reference is any of the vintage Speedball lettering and poster design books.  I have my father’s copy from when he was a draftsman.

After a quick websearch on your suggestion it looks like an excellent suggestion.
Thank you
