This trade rifle is ready to start its journey across the Rocky Mountains to its new home this week. The heart of this rifle is a 31” long by 1 1/16” across the flats .58 caliber FCI barrel. Ignition comes from a Baker-Whatley flintlock tradegun lock by Larry Zorn that has been case color hardened. The curly maple stock was cut from a board given to me by a friend out in Colorado who has had it hidden away it in his shop for over 20 years. The tradegun pipes are from Jack Brooks. The buttplate is a Peter Brong from Reeves Goehring. The sand cast brass triggerguard is in the style of Wolfgang Haga. The double set triggers are modified Bob Roller’s. The patchbox is taken from a John Gonter eifle as is the wriggle work band on the one piece nosecap. The half serpent sideplate was borrowed from a late Krieder rifle. The muzzle has been adorned with 8 silver “dots”. All these components are inlet into a Jacob Dickert style stock.

These strong, hard working rifles really appear to me over many other guns of the same period. Maybe it’s the romance of being associated with the fur trade. Any fella would be happy to see this one at a trading post or fur trade rendezvous, for sure.

Really looks to be a nice shooting rifle, once the muzzle's sharp machine cut crown is attended to.

Austin is a fortunate man. That should be a hunting machine, and a beautiful one at that.

I saw this rifle in person at Wayne's and at CLA. It is typical Rase work.....that is to say desirable. The feel and lines are really nice, and the finishes are inviting. David has mastered color case hardening, something not easily done. Getting those colors and hardening without warping parts is a challenge I understand.
