I would like to know if I could replace a Chambers early ketland with a Kibler colonial without too much trouble?

I never saw feet on a kibler lock to know how big a foot pri t it would have.
The chambers flat early Kentland is the fastest big lock on the market.

Have you had computer timing done on locks to determine which lock is the fastest? If not l, it’s nothing more than an opinion. Talk to Larry Pletcher. He has done more work timing locks than anyone. He has concluded that we can’t discern the differences in time that are commonly seen amongst locks. At least locks that are moderately close in time. Maybe you have some superpower, though😉

It's my super computer brain that tells me so. I have shot flint skeet for decades and have found that particular lock to be an incredible performer. The chambers late Kentland is another extremely fast lock from my personal experience. I'll confess I haven't shot skeet with a kibler lock so they may be as fast as my favorites, I really can't say. There are an incredible number of locks on the market these days. When I first started building guns a siler was about the only flintlock available that worked reliably. There has been a lot of advancement since those days....thankfully. Send me a couple kibler locks and I'll build some skeet guns around them and give you a report.

Hi,
You might be able to swap them. The early Ketland is 1" wide behind the pan, and 5 7/8" long. The Chambers round-faced English lock is the same width and 1/8" longer. I think Jim Kibler's lock is pretty close to that. A lot depends on the position of the pan and the taper of the tail.

Bob in the woods, i just finished inletting one of Kiblers colonials in a build. if i can i will outline the plate and post it either full size or with dimensions.
as to fastness i am thoroughly impressed with this lock.

I use Track of the Wolf's lock photos because they are full size, and useful for planning a build. Thanks for your interest and offer.

What is wrong with your Chambers lock? Their early Ketland is one of the best locks out there.

I believe I have both of those locks in the shop. I will see what I have here shortly and see the similarities.

I have a Chambers early Ketland in front of me and remeasured the plate accurately without the parts attached. It is 5 15/16" long and 1" wide behind the pan. It is a few years old so maybe Chambers changed the dimensions but mine is longer than 5 3/4". So Kiblers round-faced lock is a little larger but much will depend on the shape, obviously.

I am building a little 50 cal with the Chambers lock. I pulled it and it does indeed look like with a bit more wood removal that the Kibler lock would fit. Much to my surprise! I look forward to trying out the Kibler lock in a VA 54 but of yet have no experience with it. The Chambers lock has been a proven excellent performer for me.

If there’s an existing inlet it not only has to fit but the touch hole needs to be located almost exactly the same. Or a lot of fiddling around. It’s not just the footprint.

It is not a drop in replacement but it could be made to work. It is much closer than I thought.

I have never heard of the Chambers locks being slow either. Nor many models of M&G and some of the davis locks are very fast as well.
There are many great locks out on the market these days and only a few clunkers.
