Horn with lots of file work
« on: August 15, 2022, 02:08:17 AM »
Hello All,

I finally called it quits on a horn that I worked at on-and-off for well over a year.  It didn't come out quite as I envisioned at the start but that's okay.  I considered it a challenge to up my file work game.

It's approximately 14 inches on the outside curve.  The 3" plug is a piece of already distressed walnut board nabbed off a "free" pile and the stopper is pine.  Everything between the rounded tip to the raised ring is seven-sided.

I rubbed the finished horn with slices off a green walnut and then, when dry, topped that with an iron-in-vinegar mix and went after it with the heat gun.  Final step was a warm coat of beeswax.  It will be keeping company with my flint fowler.

Enjoy,
Kevin

Your right you've got a lot of time in that one, filing that ring is a challenge in itself. Looks Good, Well done.

7-sided to match the rifling? That’s pretty cool.

Hey Fellows,

Thanks for stopping by to take a look and the kind words.

7-sided to match the rifling? That’s pretty cool.

Rich, not sure that the 7 sides are to match the rifling but the Sibley's "Recreating the 18th Century Powder Horn" shows an original horn on page 66 that is 7-sided.  When I measured around my horn where I had penciled in the bottom of the neck it happened to be right at 7 inches.  That made the math real easy and I went for it.

Take Care,
Kevin
