Sparrow Flintlock Pistol Done
« on: August 23, 2022, 05:30:23 PM »
It's done. I varnished the pistol after allowing the oil-rub to dry. (I may wax the stock also in several weeks time.)
It's been a great experience making this Flintlock pistol. There were some challenges as always, but the build went by pretty smoothly.
The butt cap inlet was painstaking but it came out pretty well for my first attempt at this type. I plan to make a more correct ramrod later, and perhaps even try and modify the pan (rounding it to a more English style) as well.
The pistol is from a kit by Muzzleloader Builder's Supply. The 10 inch barrel is .50 caliber and a smoothbore. The stock is American Black Walnut with brass mountings.
This should be a fun gun to shoot, both roundball and maybe even some bird shot as well.

Thank you Rich, Wayne and Algae!
I hope the next one will be as fun and with fewer 'oopsies'.

Nice job on the pistol.  I am curious how it will shoot a round ball.

Hi iloco- I am curious about it’s performance with round ball too. 10” smoothbore can’t be that accurate but we’ll see 😎

Smoothbore pistols can be quite accurate  with the right load. This was a 3 shot group from a bench at 15 yards with my .50 cal smoothbore.

Justin,
For smooth bore pistol accuracy, look at Olympic results.    Incredibly good scores off-hand !

I didn't know they shot smoothbores in the Olympics.

Well I had a bit of time this afternoon to try out the Sparrow. I had some .440 round ball and used heavy denim for patch. 30 grains of powder at 12 yards. I used a portable work table to rest the gun on- not the best arrangement but it was OK enough for the trial run. Yup, It was fun.
I will try some bird shot next time 🙂

Nicely done. Buck and ball loads are fun.  I'd use maybe #3 or 4 buckshot.

Nice pistol. The tang carving is interesting. Those pistols are meant to be shot with one hand. I have never shot a pistol off a bench. If you can't make it shoot offhand, use buck shot as Daryl suggests.

Thank you folks!
A friend gave me a bunch of .495 round balls, which may be better than the ,445 that I was using (all I had)!
If I can pull myself away from the workbench and shoot it I will be interested to see how it goes  :)
The bird shot is another adventure I am looking to try as well!
