Carving Educational Materials
« on: August 29, 2022, 08:27:30 PM »
Good afternoon,

I'd like to get started in learning to carve in my spare time. Could anyone recommend and instructional materials online or video that are good for a complete novice.

Also should I consider purchasing an inexpensive stock to practice on?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Glen

Jack Brooks has a good DVD.  If you are wanting to learn about carving the American Longrifle,  I'd suggest RCA vol. 1 & 2.  to study original work.

I don't know if it's still available, but Gary Brumfield used to have information on his website. It might be worth a search... and it's free.

In my very amateur opinion, any book you obtain will be of great help in your endeavors. Watching video's by good experienced people is always a plus. I don't think you can "over study" for this type of work.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Is it best just to keep an eye on their website for dates.

Also saw you are in Iowa. We spend time every year visiting friends down in Ft Madison. Beautiful state
