After working on it off and on for 18 years, my first carved flintlock is complete, and I got a chance to shoot it today. Lots of fun getting to finally use it!

The rifle is based on JP Beck’s work, but not a copy of any specific rifle. It is a collection of my favorite features from different Beck works. This is what I would order from him in the late 1700’s, if such a thing were possible.

It is built around a 44” swamped .54 rifled barrel. Lock is a slightly modified deluxe Siler, if I remember correctly. I haven’t weighed it, but the balance is very good, and it seems quite light. Due to the wide butt plate, kick is minimal. The finish is iron nitrate, applied twice and blushed twice, with oil varnish over that.

Let me congratulate you in finishing this rifle. The pictures show it is very nice. Glad you enjoyed shooting it. The wood is beautiful, and after 18 years it is well seasoned.

Very well done. Crisp & clean work with a beautiful finish. You are right about the photographing thing. It looks like you have your lighting down, just maybe need something that's a bit more flat for a background.

Forty years ago I had a buddy, Don Beck, who was a descendant of Beck's. I guarantee Don would be proud to own this fine example.
