Jaeger with an octagon to round barrel.
« on: September 11, 2022, 02:19:48 PM »
Has anyone ever seen an original Jaeger rifle built using an octagon to round barrel.  I looked through my refrences and did see one.  It seems like it would make a nice light Jaeger, but I don't want to stray to far on this.

I owned one until a couple years ago. It was half stocked. I'll see if I can locate the photos.

I have a german gun with a rifled muzzle. It's only rifled for about an inch in an exaggerated flare  or cone at the end of the bore. I have occasionally seen them rifled all the way but it's been straight rifled. These 1/2 stock guns look like fowling guns and probably were. I have also heard them called boar guns as well.

Thanks, I have Shumway's book on Jaegers.  I must have missed that one.   It seems that it was done, so I might avoid the P>C> police.

Heres one by Morganroth with an octagon to round barrel and oval bore.

Here is a shot out of this book: https://www.dwjmedien.de/Steinschloss-Jaegerbuechsen
Many nice Jaeger rifles in there with detail pictures . A few are with octagonal to round barrels.
If this shop sells to the U.S., I don't know, but according to their terms they ship at least to countries outside of the EU.

Note: The link above is just for information. I'm not involved in their business nor do I receive any pay from them. I bought the book myself to get inspiration for my jaeger rifle project and I'm overwhelmed by the amount and quality of the guns inside.

That is interesting Keith,  The barrel I have is the same length.   Where do you go in
Ridgeway, the rifle club.   I am interested in seeing it.

Grischi,
I think Jim Chambers is still selling this book w/ an English translation.  It looks like an outstanding book on the subject of Jaegers.

Here is a picture of one  I traded into at one of the shows . It is  octagon to round half stock. Very light weight .  All I know about it is what Brooks had to say when I posted it here.  He said it's a fowling  gun .

I just had a nice oct to round Jaeger/ boar gun come thru the shop today it had one of those sharp bevel Brandenburg locks (original flint) similar to one shown in Shumways Jaeger articles book (page 94) but with an octagonal section that faded to round, about 34" barrel.

Thanks for the conformation of yet another O/R barrel on a Jaeger style rifle.  I am surprised by the number that that the members have provided photos and data on.  When I get some other projects out of the way, I will have solid footing on this Jaeger build.

Thanks again to all who have helped.
