Black Powder source? Where to buy?
« on: September 14, 2022, 02:44:00 AM »
I've just ignored my supply of BP and around this neck of the woods the local gun shops that carried BP have just closed up. It's my understanding that GOEX has stopped making BP...then I read they were going to again....then not.

I've searched the internet and found nothing. Maybe I need to look more, but is there a source to buy BP anywhere?

2F, 3F, or 4F?
Try Bear River Powder or Main Powder House. Both show some in stock. I have bought from Bear River and found them very helpful and reputable dealer.

It’s all dried up here in Alaska. Only BP I’ve seen for the last two years is at gun shows and auctions.
I sure hope someone starts bringing it in.

Is the "Old Eynsford" brand of powder essentially the same as "regular" GOEX?

I found Old Eyensford to be a little hotter than Goex. It’s funny that you asked, I had the same discussion with some guys at Friendship last weekend. These guys are serious competitors. They all agree that Old E is hotter than Goex and pretty much comparable to Swiss powder. Swiss seems to be the gold standard in powder.
I did some comparisons of Old E to Goex and Scheutzen and found that the flintlock was slightly faster with the Old E.. The recoil was a little harder too. I know that what I just stated isn’t very scientific but it’s what I noticed with my senses.
I’m going to try both in this bullet barrel gun that’s on the bench.
 Good luck 🍀!!

An honest evaluation is always appreciated!  Did you find your POI using the hotter powders changed from the "standard" GOEX?  Thanks much!!

And BTW...if you can't recall I get that. Dunno how old you are but I will say you gotta be tough to get old..... 8)

Don't know where you're located, but Gunnies in Provo Utah had some last week.  Also #11 caps.

POI seemed to be smidgen high and that could have been the result of quicker ignition time.

Old Eynsford. Mad Monk told me he thought that “something new had been added” to this stuff. It was a little too good for the charcoal that Goex used. And the smoke smelled different. But I think he was too sick to do the research. Never, ever, use pyrodex. 777 is not or at least less corrosive but may been a booster of black to work really well even with normal percussion caps. Its intended for inlines with shotgun primers.
Swiss is a very good powder and 1.5f would would well with the conicals or even Fg. Its very much like the old premium powders of the 19th c.
Goex or what every name they come up with should stay in business at some level. Unless the military has found a replacement for BP in boosters and fuses. But I don’t. But since its imported one has to keep an eye on the distributors to get it when its there.
Buffalo Arms in Idaho is my go to since its close and I could even drive over if I needed to. But again it comes and goes.

They have 1.5 f Swiss and Fg Schuetzen in stock at the moment. But there is shipping and hazmat. Its best to do a group order but look to the laws governing such things. You need to get paid for it BEFORE you order it on group purchases, or so I have read.

I do thank all of you for your post!  I've been "asleep at the switch" as I knew that since GOEX went out, finding BP in my area was going to get difficult.

I'm essentially cheap and hate to pay the hazmat fee for shipping....so it's my own fault.

But a call yesterday to a local shop that I've never visited revealed they had a supply of GOEX 2F and 4F. No hazmat involved!!  Picking up some today!

Again, thanks. Hopefully GOEX will restart and make not only just BP.....but "better" BP than they have produced in the past.

I use the Old Eynsford powder and "in my opinion" it is a higher grade of GOEX. It seems cleaner and the kernels seem to be a more consistent size. As for accuracy it may have a bit of an edge over the regular GOEX but I'm not throwing the regular stuff away.

Wow ! What happened to black powder?

I've been a muzzleloader hunter for many years but have not needed to buy powder for quite sometime as a pound will last me a few years.
I recently finished building a kit flintlock so I need powder. I tried my local muzzleloader supply store and he said they have not had any powder for awhile and don't know when they will see any.
I found several online suppliers but many require a minimum 5 pound purchase.  I don't want or need 5 pounds of black powder in my home!
I finally found a seller online in Texas. Travelers Antiques and Trading. They have Schuetzen and Swiss in stock ready to ship.
I bought one pound of 2F and one pound of 4F Swiss. Grand total $126.05
A pound of Swiss $28 Schuetzen  $24. Shipping charge is $65 for 1-20 pounds including hazmat fee. $5.05 processing fee.

Alaska might be difficult unless brought in by boat. The Canadian powder shipping laws are quite ridiculous when it comes to real BP, less so for phony ones like T-7.
Our late friend, Bill Knight once noted if he had to use a phony powder, it would be T-7 as it contained no perchlorates.(even though the MSD sheet said it did) T-7
won't work well in a flinter.
