A New Don Bruton Creation
« on: September 14, 2022, 08:10:56 PM »
Story:
In 1758 like many families in Pennsylvania this family was making the migration to the Southern states of either North or South Carolina looking for land they could own and build a life on. When they got to Virginia the youngest son who was 15 at the time took up an apprenticeship with a gun maker and blacksmith. This rifle was built in or about 1788 when our mature farmer/blacksmith was 45 years old had returned to the Carolina's to join his family. In this period of his life he found himself actively building and repairing guns on the post-revolution southern frontier.
The rifle:
.50 caliber "B" weight Rice swamped 42-inch barrel with a Chambers Early Ketland lock. It has a maple stock, making the rifle very light. The entire rifle is a combination of brass and iron. The brass forearm "wear plate" is a nice and period correct addition. It has a pivoting iron patchbox. The entire rifle has a light patina (a Don Bruton trademark). I thought everyone would like to see it. 90 minutes after it was advertised to me even though his next creation is for me it was sold saving my wife's bank account a larger hit.

Don's work always makes me smile. I can't wait to see what he dreams up for my next gun. I do know it will be a .54 caliber smooth bore. Don is a humble gentleman who still creates these one of a kind guns in the old fashioned way using hand tools.

Fabulous creative stuff going on there. Don must be taking some hints from Ian and Ken.
We as makers need to be doing more of this type work.
Outstanding indeed.

I've never seen a piece of Don's work I didn't like. A fine gentleman, as well as a fine gunmaker. We Carolina boys are awful proud of him.

Don creates guns that are beyond the normal and with an abundance of character all their own..   I like it a lot...reminds me of a gun I seen that had a coffin shaped patch box..from some guy in Paris Kentucky...

 8) 8).. Don is a fine fellow and this is reflected in his work,... Bob is right, all Carolina is  proud of him,..... he has been building unique iron rifles before most of the current builders were weaned,... folk over in the "Dark Corner" don't get out much, but I hope Don and his missus come to the Knoxville show again next Spring ,...I like everything about this one,.. especially that  butt-plate,..... !!!... regards,... True words Bob.   Ditto on your sentiments.

That gun has Don's classic lines, and I'll bet it soaks up recoil with ease.  The patchbox lid is a departure for Don (at least in my experience) and is a delightful touch.  My favorite feature is the buttplate up and other the comb.   So cool!

What a cool gun.  God Bless, Marc

That butt plate extension along the comb is very unusual and is a nice added touch. The wear plate on the bottom of the forearm is also pretty. That gun is another outstanding example of Don's work.

After reading and seeing you all post pics of Bruton rifles, I wanted to see one up close.  Well, I stumbled onto one accidently and boy was it a beauty.  I'm a lefty and thought I wouldn't mind it being right but I do like the lock on the left side.  So, It'll be for sale at the Front Royal show this weekend.  If it was a lefty, it would never leave PA.  I was amazed at the workmanship and lines of his rifle.  He is a true master for sure!
