Engraved Patch Box (See new post for completed and installed box)
« on: September 15, 2022, 01:09:17 AM »
I thought I would post a picture of the engraving on this patch box before I put color on the box. This is going on one of Jim's Southern Mountain rifles. I think it turn out pretty good and I just thought I would share it.

Very nice Jim.

I’ve got a steel hidden hinge box that will be getting engraved soon.  Hope it turns out as good. ;)

Thanks guys. I know the eagle is a little modern and a little out of place on a southern gun but I just wanted to do the eagle and I just went for it. Jeff I am sure you are going to do a great job on the engraving. My engraving still has a ways to go but I continue to work on it. Sooner or later you just got to say I have practiced enough and just cut something for real. Well, here it is. I should have the rifle buttoned up soon and I will post some pictures of it.

That’s a tricky hinge to make, although it looks pretty simple. Nice work all around.

Well done brother Jim, one day I'm going to get you to teach me a thing or two. 'Course that will be as much fun as teaching a mule to tap dance  ;)

Best,
Carl

That eagle gives it a very "Federal Period" look.  I like it.

Jim,
That looks great! That will enhance the SMR greatly and you can come up with a great storyline for why a much better than usual patchbox was installed on that particular rifle. I would imagine even back in the middle 1800s, gunsmiths were getting special orders for some specific purpose. Your engraving looks great. Congrats to the new owner. Something to be proud of.
