1877 Scrimshawed Powder Measure Old Manson
« on: September 15, 2022, 04:03:53 PM »
A powder measure in my collection with two rifles, a knife, a date of 1877 and the name Old Manson scratched on it.

Very nice Frank!  Do you think it might say "OLD MAN & SON"??   Is the material bone, horn, or antler?

I think I see an & below the MAN.

Thank you for sharing this!

Interesting thought Joel and a good question, I don’t know, but you could be right about it being Old Man & Son, but the spacing made me think Manson. As for what it’s made of, I thought it was an antler tip, but it’s worn so smooth it could be made out of bone. Wish it was dated 1777, but it’s still an interesting piece.

These certainly do not turn up much anymore. This one is a dandy, Frank. Almost looks like ivory. Thank you for letting us see it. Good find!

I'd stay with "Manson" as the name. If you look closely at your bottom image, what appears to be an ampersand is really the top curve of the percussion hammer on the gun below the name. It's always interesting to see a gun-related accoutrement with an image of the gun it served on it, and you lucked out and got two images of guns on this neat little measure... so it must have outlived several "companions" over the years.

Thanks Shelby, and yes I think you’re right about the name, the hammer on the rifle is what Joel thought was an ampersand.

I’m not sure Bob, I’ve never used it. I’ll check when I get a chance.

It does look like "Manson" but,,, "MAN" is scratched in with double lines and fairly evenly spaced. "Son" however os squeezesld in and only has single line thickness.
Interesting that both capital letter N are backwards.
