I decided to make a separate post from the "Engraved Patch Box" post to show the completed rifle. So here it is!

This rifle started as one of Jim Kibler's SMR kits and I want to say thankyou to Jim for producing such a fine canvas to work with. I sent Jim a nice piece of Freddy Harrison's Stump cut quarter sawn wood to make this kit out of. I then decided to add a nose cap, toe plate, coin silver side plate and a coin silver inlay behind the cheek piece. As I looked at the project as it progressed I decided to add a patch box and a entry pipe. For the pipe design I used mu Jonathan Gross rifle for the design. This entry pipe is made up of 3 separate pieces as was the original. I then decided to style the patch box on the great David Kennedy rifle that is in Bill Ivey's great book. Now this is not your everyday Tennessee iron mounted rifle, it has silver inlays and engraving. I did not make an exact copy but used this rifle as an example to go by. I then use the pin wheel inlay design from an original southern rifle that I got from Wayne Elliot. So this little rifle is a conglomerate of ideas that I got from these 3 rifles.

Here is my completed rifle that I am going to call a Alabama Hog Rifle since it design was inspired by David Kennedy. The Kennedy family moved to Alabama and set a gun making factory near Florence Al. So the Iron mounted rifle in Bill's book could have Alabama roots.

This rifle is 45 cal and I will be listing it in the for sale forum if anyone is interested. It wound make a dandy deer rifle.

Hey Jim, nice work. I must say that in each instance where you used a design feature from an original, you inproved on the original. You brought a level of sophistication to these elements and then wove them together in a pleasing way---and that is coming from a Yankee.

Nice Jim, really like the pin wheel. What thickness is the patch box and pin wheel ? Did you roll those hinges yourself? Did you soften the iron first? Steve

StevebV the patch box is 18 gage cold rolled sheet steel. I forget the gage of the silver but it’s about 16 to 18 thousands thick. I did bend the hinges and you can bend the cold roll sheet steel without heating it. I made a YouTube video on how I make my hinges out of cold roll sheet steel. Search for making a Charlie Bean patch box by Calvary Longrifles.
