My Version Of A John Armstrong Rifle
« on: October 08, 2022, 05:30:36 PM »
I made my first rifle over 40 years ago, I was fortunate enough to have apprenticed under Carl Pippert and George Stanford. I haven’t made many rifles and I hadn’t completed one in quite a while. About ten years ago I told my wife I would make one for her and I decided to make a ladies size Armstrong. I started and stopped several times and would sometimes go years in between working on it. One day I saw it in the corner and decided to finish it because I wasn’t getting any younger. I have pictures of it while it was being built and when it was finish. I see all of my mistakes, hopefully they are small enough that you won’t. 😉

Yes! Very nice. Among a lot of details I like is the little heart in the finial.

Thank you. Armstrong was noted for putting the little hearts in his beaver tails, they’re a pain to make, engrave and inlay, but they sure look nice.

Thank you Mike. I hadn’t engraved in a while and I was worried if I had lost my touch. I spent about a week practicing until I felt comfortable working on the rifle parts, turned out ok.

Beautifully well done Frank!  Right down to the iron insert in the heel of the butt plate!  Ole John Armstrong would be proud to see his work fashioned so nicely by your hand!

Very nice job.
Picked a great maker to emulate and produced a great rifle.
