Penetration
« on: October 11, 2022, 12:05:24 AM »
I bought a metal silhouette that was advertised for .22 target shooting thinking that it would work for my .32 flintlock.  The metal was 3/16 thick.  Thought something was wrong when shooting because the silhouette did not swing when I shot.  Couldn't believe I missed all 5 shots so I went to look.  Guess the .22 limit was for real.

Wow! I have shot a ton of 1/4 inch steel plates with round ball, maxi and cartridge arms. Never had a lead RB make more than a ding in the face. How much powder you have stacked up behind those .32 balls?

Pistol targets are generally mild steel. Ar400 or AR 500 will be uneffected. I have seriously divoted a much heaver "44 magnum" rated target at 40 yards with my 50 cal. Once the velocity is past a certain point mild steel will fail.

We used to have a bunch of of old propane tanks on the trail. All the rifles pen those. I suspect it was only the hardened balls from 20 bores and maybe my .69, that penned the
handle sections, but pen, they did.
Smaller bore having higher velocity, as Dan notes, will pen more steel.  It is easy to get 1,800fps from a .32, or even 2,240fps from a .40. Mine did.  All I had to do was use .398" ball, .0225" patch, LHV lube and 75gr. 3F GOEX. 2,240fps. With that load, I shot off a 5/16" steel bolt at about 25yards.
We also have a steel tube/pipe, with what appears to be 3/8" thick sides. There is a large hole front & back in the centre of that tube. It has a diameter of about 12" & situated about 85yards from the firing line. It used to have another steel pipe inside, hanging by a chain so any hit on it, even from a .32, would make it ring inside like a bell. My .69, even with only a
light charge of 82gr. would make it ring for several minutes. Fun target, now with holes from the steady beating it got, with small balls at higher velocity and larger balls, .58's through to
the .69 at lower velocities.

This is my larger ram silhouette.  The metal is 1/2 inch thick.  Guess that is what it takes to survive the ravages of the antique round ball.  You can see impact craters from .32, .50, and .58 balls on the ram.  They all dented the metal to approximately the same depth, but the craters obviously vary in size.  Imagine this guy knows how the moon feels.  (Sorry the image is upside down.  Gotta figure out the rotation thing)

And we commonly hear .32 thru about .40 referred to as "squirrel guns". Yikes! That's some bad squirrels!  ;D

Years ago I shot a swinging 22 silhouette ram with my .36 with a moderate load.  It swung around the bar about three times.  When I checked it, it had a big dent and had almost gone through.  I stopped shooting it with the muzzleloader.

Wouldn't metal "composition" have something to do with the penetration? A softer metal would be easier to poke a hole through than a harder one.

Had a guy show up in hunting camp, who had a .32 TC rifle. He had a decent load in it that actually shot well.  I think it was around 35 or 40gr.  When I guided him, he proceeded to shoot a couple grouse in the body. Nothing but chunks. At a velocity of about 1,700fps to 1,800fps striking velocity, that is all together too much for small game body shots. I told him "you're supposed to shoot them in the head."  He noted that he couldn't make out their heads with his eyes, they way they were.

Hey Jeff. I would say to stop wasting money on soft metal targets. Get some AR500 targets.  They are not costly, and won’t even slightly dent with a roundball.  You just touch up the spraypaint.  God bless, Marc

I 2nd the AR500 targets. Those soft steel cratered targets have been known to send bullets back at you. I mount my AR500 targets slightly tilted down and to one side from the shooting line to deflect all shots into the ground.

The very worse target stands for sending back round balls and bullets, are rail-way rails.

Marc, I do have some tempered silhouettes designed to withstand modern rounds, but they fall down when you hit them.  I bought this one because the small area I have to plink behind my house is down a steep slope above a creek, and it was supposed to swing and clang.  Much easier to carry something light down the slope.  I did find another one that should work.  Guess the old "best laid plans" saying still holds water.

I always thought the only draw of the .32 was to use as little lead and powder as possible.

The .32 is a great caliber for hunting small game and plinking.  Mine has a slow twist and shoots best with a relatively hot load.  I have also shot it in competition.  The best target I ever shot was with the .32.  It was a cross stick match at 50 yards on the NMLRA small six bull target.  Shot a 50-4X.  Wish my eyes were still that good.
