Pistol loading bench jig\holder..??
« on: October 12, 2022, 04:01:30 PM »
Has anyone built a device\jig\holder to load a front stuffer when shooting at the range? When I load my pistol I never place the butt of it on a padded table. I always hold\grip the pistol under my left arm (I'm right-handed) while starting the ball and raming the ball to be seated.

I do it as my concern is possibly cracking the pistol at the curve of the grip with "pounding" the ball into and down the barrel. (BTW, I ALWAYS keep the pan open and the hammer is let completely down...not at half cock....when I do this to avoid "bad things" when all that commotion is occurring under my left arm!)

OTOH, I don't know how to make a device that would "spread" the energy of loading so the energy would not be the greatest at the curve of the pistol....if what I said makes sense.

Thanks much!

I made a loading stand for my 40 cal pistol and it works good. I shoot a fairly tight load in it and have never had any problems and I have not heard of anyone else having trouble who use the same set up. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I just have not heard of anyone breaking their stock using one of those stands.

I've never cracked the stock loading it. But my "fear" (perhaps unfounded) is that initial "hit" of loading the round with that pressure would end up stressing the pistol at it's weakest link....being the curve of the handle.

Steeltrap, I had the same concerns as you, so I built this loading stand.  IIRC, I copied it from some other source but I can't remember where.  Note the leather in the cradle to provide support  along the entire grip.

I also load a fairly tight load, however I load mine in my hands, holding onto the barrel and forend.

I made one for my traditional Kentucky style pistol.  Traced the pistol on a 1 inch board and cut out the silhouette.  Cut two side boards and tacked them together on a base stand.  Lined the groove with felt.  It works great but won't fit in my shooting pouch no matter how hard I try.

Just a thought......maybe a bigger pouch?? ;D

Thanks!  That's what I'm looking for. I can do the build just from your pics. That would (as it appears to me) hold the pistol without it moving during the load, plus "spread" the loading forces across the entire pistol grip.

I think a bigger pouch would be what is called a backpack today.

Steeltrap, the base is wide to accommodate using a C-clamp to affix the loading stand to a shooting bench.  Bill

I can see where this might be handy when loading at the range from a single shooting position.
I only did that searching for loads.  My pistol now only gets shot on our trail or the trail at Hefley.
Can't carry the bench with you and all loading, for everyone, is out of a possibles bag.

Maybe trade your backpack in for a hand truck?

LOL - my bench carrying days are pretty close to being over, besides, I like loading from a possible's bag. Everything needed is in there.
If a bench is a necessary tool, then perhaps more & different experience(s) will be a positive benefit.

I load my muzzleloading pistols without the use of a bench or support. loading from the bag.  Having poured in 25 gr. 3Fg GOEX in my .60 cal Hawken style pistol, I support the pistol between my knees while I place a pre-lubed, pre-cut round patch over the muzzle, then place a ball.  I use a long starter and seat the ball flush with the muzzle with one smack, then a second strike with the short peg on the knob to send the ball into the bore about 5/16".  the long starter than pushes the ball down the bore to the powder charge where it is seated with firm pressure...no whacking or bouncing of the rod.  This pistol will place five balls into one hole at 25 yards offhand when I do my part, loading in this manner, without jeopardizing the stock.

This is a poor quality photo, but does show the hinge that allows this design to fold.  These fold right up and are easy to transport.  God Bless,   Marc

That's an "efficient" looking design and likely really great for loading BP revolvers. But those revolvers have steel backstraps as well as the TG which extends all the way to the backstrap. That's a solid setup.

But for flintlock pistols that don't have that steel or brass reinforcement, a leather padded curved insert that would allow the curve of the pistol grip would be far better in spreading out the downward loading forces across the pistol grip.

A hinge like the one in that photo is a good idea and perhaps could be incorporated into what I'm wanting to make. Also, extending the bottom piece so the unit could be "C" Clamped onto a shooting bench would be a "must have" upgrade.

But thanks for the post as the hinge idea to make the unit more compact is a really good idea.  8)

Edit:  I also think the height of the unit for loading a flintlock or cap lock pistol would need to be high enough so the user could wrap his\her fingers around the barrel and the top of the unit at the same time, in order to "hold" the pistol tight against the padded top. If the unit is to low, it may negate any advantage of keeping the pistol snug against the leather top....and the leather padded curve.
