Barrel Wall Thickness
« on: October 12, 2022, 11:14:42 PM »
Hey Gentleman,

Working on an octagon-to-round, 12Ga (.720") smoothbore. A veteran builder might not blink twice at this but is it okay if my barrel wall thickness is .170" under the dovetailed-tenon? I also gouged me barrel a little as the lock-bolt drill-bit passed under it while I had the barrel installed. The barrel wall thickness at the gouge is even thicker.

Just looking for some reassurance. One day I'd like to proof this barrel, but won’t be for a while.

Thanks Guys,
DHouse

.170” is no problem. Also, the nick for the lock bolt is only a scratch  ;D
You have nothing to worry about.

A little trick for barrel tenons is to cut your slot shallower than the base of your tenon. Then use a cold chisel to "raise" up each end of the slot. The chisel will also form the angle and need just a bit of cleanup. Someone used to make a special tool just for this but you can easily modify a hardware store cold chisel for this job. My tenon bases are usually .032" thick and I only make my slots about half the depth of my base thickness. Hope that all made sense.
