Virginia rifle resources.
« on: October 13, 2022, 12:46:27 AM »
Anyone know any good books or resources maybe even pictures of original Virginia rifles? Trying to study them a little bit thinking of building that or a York in .54 for my hunting rifle.

Wallace Guslar wrote a bunch of articles for Muzzle Blast back in the early 2000s. They all had photos and most had measurements of the rifle. He had iron mounted rifles and brass mounted ones. If you can find them they are a great resource for Virginia rifles.

What timeframe? You may want to check out the Haymaker rifle. It has great architecture and I believe is reliably tied to Virginia in the 1770s-80s timeframe. Of course there are other fairly early attributed to Virginia but unsigned guns are hard to nail down, and at best most attributions of unsigned guns, not closely linked to similar signed ones, I consider provisional.

Love the one in figure 21. More partial to the flatter butt plates.

What type of lock would be close to resembling the lock on the rifle in figure 21 at the bottom. I thought of going with a chambers golden age or one of the siler locks.

The lock on the Klette rifle looks very Germanic, I don’t know how much of the lock is original or if it’s had any restoration. Perhaps someone on the forum knows and will enlighten us. My personal choice would be the Chambers Early Ketland. A lot of English locks on Virginia rifles.

My version of a Virginia LR is shown. Seeing I didn't know what an early Virginia stock looked like, I sent the blank to a person  {forgot his name}  who had  a stock copy of an original early Virginia. and he profiled it. The lock is an English style. The Bplate is 2-3/16" wide.

Is there a lock produced that is equivalent to that style lock ?

The lock on the Henry Spitzer rifle in the library in the link above, 090823-1, is original flint and original to the rifle.
I probably have better pics of it if you want them.
