Looking forward to receiving mine. I do have a question as a curious onlooker with no CNC experience whatsoever: How long does it take for the machine to turn a profiled slab into a finished Woodsrunner stock?

Thanks,
Jay

Right now, about an hour and 45 minutes.  I think we can improve it to at least an hour and 30 minutes, perhaps more.

I watched your video last night.  Like all of your videos (and I think I have seen all of them), it was fun and informative.

Having lived my first life in the business world, I like your explanations of decisions you must make regarding design, parts, and the manufacturing process.  It allows one to get a glimpse of the many challenges, each requiring its’ own problem solving process, involved in producing the product you do at such a high level of precision.  It also allows us to see that you must sometimes find a balance between customer desires (or your own), manufacturing capabilities, cost, risk, and the return on your investment.  It’s pretty cool to see you all, as entrepreneurs, bringing modern technology to this part of the industry.  So much time and energy invested as well.  With this kit, it looks like you’ve raised the bar yet again.

No doubt, all of folks who’ve got a Woodsrunner on order are chomping at the bit right now; just waiting for the kits to start going out.  It will be fun to see customers’ photos of assembled and finished guns.

Video was very informative and gave some nice insights into kit production and how the development time is spent. Thank you!

Jim & Katherine, another milestone in producing a superior product! I enjoy watching knowing each of you contribute unique talents that combine in this effort. Katherine, I know Jim values you greatly, so when he may seem a little "short" with you when he was reaching for a mallet he reminds me of myself when I am explaining something that I am an expert on! He means no disrespect, he and I just have our minds going in a particular direction...yours was a valuable comment that caught him perhaps a little off guard and he had to modify his thoughts on the fly so to speak. Very common among guys in technical work! We do love our 'gals' though we don't communicate it well in the feminine manner. :D and Katherine your abilities are what make Jim look so good on these videos!  8)

Wishing you and yours the best,
Carl

Iam impressed with your attention to the details and all the upgrades in another historically  correct longrifle kit. I've spoken to many people who have recently purchased one of your kits and have never shot a flintlock before. You've introduced manyx people to this hobby or to some a lifestyle through your kits that may of never been exposed to this experience. I was impressed with this rifle after reading Wallace Gusllers article on it years ago. The owner of it graccily let me handle it at the CLA a few years ago. I liked it because it was so different from any longrifle I had seen.  Well done.

Yeah, we just kept this in the video to show a bit of reality!  She gives me a little trouble sometimes as well ;)  We do pretty good, but it's not always working with your wife or husband!

Very happy to see the update on a rifle I've pre-ordered, sight unseen, based on your reputation.  Having the other 2 kits didn't hurt either.   :)

As you showed off how much improved the milling is on this one, I had the same question you addressed, about it being "too finished".  Not as much work required as on your other rifles.  As someone who learned on the Colonial, then moved on to the Mountain rifle, I don't consider those a lot of work.  A complete beginner like me was able to complete a rifle I'm am very happy with.  But the Woodrunner will be an excellent starter kit for people nervous about their ability.  Then they can progress to one of the others if they want a little more hands on work.

I ordered the Woodrunner as a Christmas present for my brother, but now I'm hoping its a little late.  Forcing me to find something else for him, and keeping it for myself.

I was hoping to hear your next project would be a Hawken, but I have no doubt I'll be ordering the Fowler when its ready.

Thanks Jim, we appreciate having someone like you that provide quality kits.

Jim and Katherine,
Congratulations on your latest offering. I was quite impressed watching you pick up parts and pop them into the stock with absolutely no wood removal and see the precise fit.
It’s a bit of paradox to see you apply your unique skill set to the faithful reproduction of this old craft by means of the most modern technology .
It makes me happy to think how many people you have introduced to this pastime thru your efforts.

Thanks
Jeff

I for one am so glad to see the even easier building qualities of the woodsrunner.

I’m not very handy, and most kit guns are intimidating to me. The fact yours go together so nicely is a BIG draw to a lot of people I think. Great work!

Is there any chance that a .54 smooth bore will be an option like in the Colonial?

Last week, I purchased one of Jim's "Colonial" kits from the "Quick Ship" section of his website to use as a demo gun for a kit class I'm teaching next March at Canter's Cave (for Southern Ohio Artisans Workshops). I was going to be in the area visiting a friend over the weekend, so I called ahead and arranged to pick up my kit and for us to take a tour of Jim's shop. Jim and his staff were super nice to us when we got there. Jim showed us around the shop and we saw the entire operation from sawmill to shipping boxes. To say that we were impressed by everything we saw is an understatement. The amount of thought and work that he and his staff has put into this venture is utterly amazing.

For anyone who has a "Woodsrunner" kit on order already (like me), prepare yourself to be blown away when you open the box. The fit and finish will far exceed your wildest expectations. The "Woodsrunner" kit should prove to be a popular addition to his already awesome lineup of kit offerings!

We're not going to offer .54 smooth initially,  but probably will in time.

Thanks

Thanks Gary.  It was nice having the two of you over.  Thanks for your part in teaching and spreading the word as well.

All the best,

That is for sharing all the information you do about various aspects of your production. I have learned a lot and it's fascinating. Especially how you rifle a barrel with a cnc lathe that wasn't meant for such a purpose!
