The Haffner Black Powder Rifle Targets
« on: October 14, 2022, 12:21:10 AM »
Since I started shooting competition, I have been interested in the origins of the NMLRA critter/animal targets.
Anyone have any background history on Mr. Haffner, and the targets he created? I have always enjoyed shooting them

Those are really cool targets. IIRC, there was also a squirrel target for 25 yards.

The NMLRA has a bunch of animal targets, including groundhog, crow, turkey head, fox, deer, buffalo and multi-head in a tree, in addition to the two shown.  Fun practice compared to a round bullseye.

The only 50 I ever shot was on a 25yd. Nightmare target.  I framed it!

Those targets are fun and can be challenging as your eye sight ages. A 6 o-clock hold on the bottom of the black just don't work well with them.  ;D

“ Charlie Haffner’s Famous Varmint Targets”..!!
I used to shoot with Charlie on his range , Owl Hollow, Tennessee.. just South of Nashville.
I was still too new to all this to recognize what a treasure Charlie was but always enjoyed hearing him tell stories.

Thanks for that bit of history, now I know his first name.

I am assuming this range is dedicated to him  https://williamsonshooting.com/about/

I met Charlie in 1981 iirc. Mid South ML Championship held near Memphis. Some good stories on Saturday Nite. Another encyclopedia of ML lost.

You are correct. I have a ton of memories associated with Charlie and this range back when it was mostly visited by muzzleloader shooters. The range has been there since the 1950s. Charlie was a mainstay at Friendship for many years and a master pistol shot. He owned the record for a now retired pistol match which was a limited time fire flintlock pistol at 25 yards. Not sure of the exact score but it was a 100 with several Xs. When you go into the cafeteria at friendship you can see his likeness on the wall painting of the pistol line to the upper right. Charlie is the fella taking aim and the one wearing the western style hat.

Many years ago, when the two NMLRA national matches were only five days long Mr. Charlie hosted two big matches that coincided with the Friendship championships and were held the weekend before. One was his Dixie shoot and the other was the Tennessee. Top shooters throughout the South stopped in on their way to Friendship for some friendly competition and warmups for the nationals.

True story about this target related to me by the first person to shoot it. Norman B. in his prime was probably one of the finest offhand flintlock shooters that ever stood on two hind legs. Norman was a regular at Mr. Charlie's range and happened to be there practicing one day. Charlie approaches Norman with the "nightmare" target and asked him to shoot it and give him his opinion of it as he was thinking of adding it to his list of targets. Norman was happy to do so and promptly posted it at 25 yards. He then proceeded to shoot a 50 on it. When he retrieved the target and was bringing back to Charlie, he asked Norman what he thought. Norman replied, "Charlie, I don't think this one will ever sell very well.... It's just too easy."

"Too Easy!"  ???   Well that certainly wasn't my opinion of the nightmare. It kicked my rear every time I shot it.

I used to travel and shoot in matches all over Georgia back around 1978 - "79 and one day I attended a Rondy at the Cherokee Bark Busters. I had shot a target, just enough to show my ignorance, when this older gentleman with white hair and beard asked if I minded if me shot next to me. That terrified me because right about then I just wanted to go home. But I said "Not at all"
He was shooting a 28 caliber flintlock longrifle. Not being pushy about it he proceeded to teach me things I needed to know. Those were the most profitable teachings I ever got.
He introduced himself as Charlie Heffner and said he made the targets we were shooting. All I had was the ramrod that came with my TC Renegade and Charlie dissapeared for a few minutes and returned with a 3/8" Hickory ram rod. I used that rr for many years until I bought a couple for myself. That ramrod, right now, is my main ramrod as it fits both my 40 and 54 calibers.
When the match was over Charlie told me that I had promise at this shooting thing and would I be willing to let him coach me a little. So I met him at a number of matches after that. He gave me a stack of targets and told me to keep practicing. He was a pretty good coach and my shooting vastly improved. The next year I took a 3rd in the 50 yard bull at the Southeastern National Match.  Well, a new job soon took me away from my monthly travels and shoots.
I never saw Mr. Charlie again but I kept up with him some over the years and we tried to plan going to a shoot but it never seemed to work out.
Then one day I asked about him from another Tennessean and was told he had passed away.
That was a sad day.

This one was featured at Hefley Creek by the lads from Edmonton as the 25 yard target. There was also a fox, I think, at 50 yards, then the buffalo at 75yards, or was it 100yards?
Difficult to get better than a 49 on the squirrel.  ;)

The bear and the woodchuck targets are my best, I'm a north south shooter anymore my east west tends to be tight and north south gets iffy.

:) :) ..... Always good to hear folks talk about Mr. Charlie Haffner ,... I knew him from the ranges around Tennessee and especially from his shop "Battle Ground Armory" at Goose Creek, Tennessee,.. I bought a lot of powder and parts from him back in the early 1970's.... He was a contemporary of some of the other legends in muzzle-loading,.. Hacker Martin, Turner Kirkland, John Anderson, Frank Bartlett, Royland Southgate, and many other Tennessee legends,.. thought some of you might recognize from  a photo of him from back in the day,...... regards,... Looks like my not trustworthy memory of a older man with white hair and beard was spot on. He was a good man to know.

The standing bear is a hundred-yard target.
Daryl your brother had us shoot a bark the squirrel target for one of the postal matches.
The squirrel in that target is smaller than the Haffner target. I printed a bunch of them for practice. The Haffner squirrel is also great practice for head shots on real squirrels.
