Powder Horn Cord Fiber ID?
« on: October 26, 2022, 05:53:45 PM »
Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to identify the type of fiber used in this powder horn cord.  Hemp? Cotton? Linen?  I like it and want to use it on my Tim Crosby New England horn.

Thanks, Jennison

Twisted sisal? (not to be confused with Twisted Sister)
Seriously though, it "looks" like thin twisted sisal cord to me.

I’m thinking linen.

I would think a thin strap/cord like that would would be uncomfortable to wear and cause the horn to slip around more than a flat strap.

I'm aware that the thin cord might slip around more, but I'm not a hunter don't intend to run around with my gun and horn.  I see period paintings with what look like such strings (as opposed to straps) tethered to powder horns and thought I might try it out.

The way it is retted out below the horn, the fibre looks like linen to me.  Too, the colour says linen.
