November Postal Match
« on: November 02, 2022, 12:03:32 AM »
Lets see if more guys can get out shooting and post targets.
I think we will repeat the last 2 month's targets - 5 shots only per target, any gun, any position, patched or otherwise round ball, however high score will win.
Post your position, load combination and rifle on the target, please. Posting a good score, let's say anything at or over 45/50 offhand, makes for bragging rights.
Open Sights only, hunting/trail-walk-type rifles or smoothbores.
1/2 ball over the outside of the white dividing lines to score up.

Great Daryl, I was hoping that we would be shooting 50 yards again. I have only three days to deer hunt in November before I go back out west. I will shoot the targets I already printed up.
Congratulations on winning Octobers match.

Tks, alacran. Good luck with both hunting and the Nov. shoot. I figured lots of guys would have targets. I've sure amassed a whack of non shot targets over the last
couple years.

It's going to get a bit more tricky now that winter has set in up here.  The range is covered, but it's roof only and there's zero wind protection.
If I get weekend day with low wind and above -10C, I'll go. Targets are already printed :)

No targets yet. Is it too cold everywhere? Perhaps hunting season is interfering? Too chilly here, but that is likely to change.

Last week of deer season , and we've had some less than ideal weather. We're getting a bunch of snow today.  It's only the middle of the month, so I'm sure that I'll get a chance to get some targets done  :)

The 10 ring as I printed them, is 2.017" from outside to outside. The X ring is 1.038"
The black is 5.022"

Finally got to the range...took just 5 shots at one target. 50 yards Offhand ...45 cal Flintah...65 grains with a .451 ball . Haven't shot in a year..but I was happy just to get out there. Took my nephew, and spent a lot of time dialing in his new .22 Lever Action Henry rifle...shot the CZ 455 .17 too..and he shot my Flinter and fell in love with it...I see one of those in his future.

31/50 - Glad you got the target figured out & Tks for participating.
I saved it to my desk-top, then right clicked, then picked "rotate right", then posted it.

Its been windy on the East slope the last couple of weeks. Have shot the ML a few times this month. But not for score. We are a little colder. At least the wind and generally low humidity has be sublimating the snow. And melting it a little. Needs to REALLY Chinook to melt the pack out of the drive. Life in Montana’s “banana belt”

We actually got above freezing this week (which was unexpected and it'll return to -20C next week), so I got out on the range.
Quite windy, but spent some time trying various 2F loads and eventually ended up with this:

The flier was the last shot, of course.

I had then all but run out of 2F, did a couple of shots of 3F from the bench, and then took this one offhand:

Definitely out of practice with the offhand and struggled to hold it after a few shots.

Lymans Great Plains .54 cal percussion.

2 other long range shooters at the range, invited them to take a couple of shots and they absolutely loved it.

Looking pretty good, Jacob. 43/50 1X off the bench and 32/50 standing.
You are in the lead so far, both standing and rested.

Yeah, well, winners tend to be around 47x, so I think that last flier will cost me :)....but then again, I do these to learn, improve and have fun. (All of which I achieved today).

1/2 ball goes to the higher score.

Do yah think that on my target...that ball hole is more in the 9 ring...by more than  1/2 a ball.? Not that it's going to hold up ...iam confident much better  scores are coming....lol

Unless my math is fooey, I score your target at 32/50 Nessmuck.  I cast some ammo for my Joseph Lang rifle today...hope to get to the range soon.  Temperature is right at freezing right now.

Yes, you are right, - down 18pts. for a 32/50. My bad.
So, you two guys who have submitted targets are tied at 32/50 for your offhand targets.
Jakob is ahead with his 43 1X/50.

Taylor and I finally got out to shoot. Been too cold but warmer today.  -7C, which is 19F and 5F wind chill. Dang chilly on the hands. Too cold, we packed it in after 10 shots.
Here they are, 1st target incl. fouling shot was my best. As my Oil/water lube was freezing, I switched to bear oil for the first 4 shots on the second target. 4th shot felt perfect
and I first looked in the 10 ring for it, there it was, an outside 6 at 3 o'clock. LOL
That was it - we packed up after firing the 5th shot using spit for lube (warm barrel with lots of heat waves, of course)
My targets don't count. a 48/50 and a 44/50.

I had such fun with my Joseph Lang 16 bore the last time out, I wanted to try it again.  In spite of it being a super rifle in every respect, I still am having trouble with a sight picture that doesn't put the bead on the centre of the target.  The rifle has express sights for 100, 150, and 200 yards.  So for 50 yards, I have to pull the bead as far down into the back sight's "V" as I can yet still see it, and hold 6 o'clock on the 7 ring.  With heat waves and a steady icy breeze, the bull takes the shape of a football oriented between 10 and 4 o'clock.  Anyway, enough excuses.  Here's the two targets I shot before my hands couldn't handle the cold any longer...scored 44/50 and 45/50.
