Greasing Tow Wads?

Those who use tow as wadding in their smoothbores, do you grease or oil the tow or just use it plain? I am thinking some lube would help reduce fouling and could also possibly reduce the risk of smoldering tow on the ground.
Thoughts?

I tried tow and got poor patterns. I lubed it after I learned that plain tow smolders after firing. I learned by seeing smoke bombs downrange.
