Scottish Highlander/The Horn Donor That Is: (WIP PIX Added)

  This is a large horn at 18 3/4" around the outside curve and 14 tip-to-tip. The butt is 2 1/2" in diameter, it is made from a piece of Oak that the owner supplied (I'll let him explain if he wants) and the horn came from one of his cows. It is held in by the same 4 Iron pins that hold the base band. The two part Antler tip is pinned together with 3 wooden pegs and to the horn with 3 more. The bands were heated, pressed on and secured with 3 pins each. The top band is a little different, it will hold the strap in place. The bands were boiled in Brown dye and the whole horns coated with Linseed oil mixed with Walnut stain and Black powdered paint, rubbed back, coated with Brown shoe polished and buffed with a cloth and brush.

That horn is very unlikely to wear through due to it rubbing against the bag!   Very cool horn Tim.  I like it.

After seeing the work in progress pictures I'm even more impressed. I would wager that your lathe tools will need at least a good honing after taking on the piece of oak!

That is a special piece of wood. My family has continually operated a rifle /blacksmith shop since late 1700’s. In 1864 Federal cavalry burnt the gun shop. The piece of oak was taken from the end of the board the rifling machine index was mortised into. So I would estimate the machine having a date of 1864 because the older one was burned up .  My daughter wanted to make something special from thIs small block and what better than a plug in powder horn. Tim did a fabulous job. The pics don’t do it justice.
