Hello, I was wondering if anyone has pictures of ash that has been stained dark. I have heard of using tar, but I don't know the procedure. If anyone has any ideas or pictures, I would appreciate seeing them. Any info would be appreciated

I believe the tar would be pine tar. There videos showing it applied to tool handles and puukko knife handles, not sure about gunstock videos

My experimenting with aqua-fortis turned ash a dark, rich, tobacco color enhancing figure in the wood.

Actually, asphalt dissolved in turpentine can make for a very nice dark finish. I did one curly maple stock that way and could not have been happier with the result. in addition to the color, the finish had a very attractive translucence and depth to it. I believe Wallace Gusler has used the same finish.

Iron nitrate colors ash very nicely.

Here's one I did a while back. Painted with 2 coats of Krylon black spray paint. Rubbed back then stained with LMF walnut stain.

Not sure how dark you are looking to go, but here is curly ash using Kibler’s aqua fortis, then a little diluted LMF stain to get the look I wanted. Aqua fortis is a great “stain” for ash.

This handle is curly ash. Stained with aqua fortice and added some bone black to fill the grain to give contrast.

I think that is the best looking ash stock I have ever seen. WOW- Just Marvelous.

Here is a picture of a curly ash stock on an original Seibert rifle. No telling what he may have used 160+ years ago.

My Kibler SMR is curly ash, I used aqua fortis and asphalt diluted in turpentine. A couple thin coats of linseed oil, then Tru Oil.

That’s a heck of a stock! Don’t remember it passing through the shop, but that happens when you see thousands of stocks.
