Looks like a kit, maybe Siler .That bolster with a hole can be assumed to align with the touch hole for what reason?

Richard (Dick) Herring, who assembled many Siler locks in the 70's and 80's. Usually very well done. Bob

I'm having a hard time with the vent hole. Can anyone explain the makers thought pattern with this?

My guess is that he wanted a thicker lock bolster.

Some kind of shade tree modification. It might work but non-traditional.

Back before swamped barrels were commonly available, it was somewhat common to attach a shim to either the side of a straight barrel or to the bolster of lock to get to a wider wrist and proper stock architecture for earlier styles. Sometimes the shim was tapered wide at rear to narrower at front, to get the flare and wrist and breech shape that a swamped barrel would provide. Sometimes a shim would also be added to the frizzen base. This is why certain lockmakers still put a too wide bolster on their locks. Bob

I can understand this modification to get a wider wrist. Still seems a little odd though, thinking outside the box I guess.

Either for width, or perhaps the main spring wedge spot on the lock was broken out and this plate was needed to capture the main spring.

If you move the lockplate out with a shim you also create a gap between the barrel and edge of the frizzen allowing the prime to fall out.

The better solution is to solder a tapered shim to the barrel, if one must do something. Either way it’s a bit of a cob job.

It looks like the frizzen fits against that shim as it fully encircles the touck hole....LK

Yes if the shim only went to the top of the pan there would be a gap, so he had to take the shim to top of the primer cover on the bottom of the frizzen then drill a hole to expose the touchhole.
