Here is some carving I did a while ago. Not sure if I showed it before or not, but was scrolling through some pictures and it caught my eye.

Hi Jim,
Beautiful work!  When you incise carve, do use a "V" chisel?  Do you usually just make one pass or do you usually have to come back and add accents and clean up the lines?  I struggle the most with clean incise work and I am almost never happy with the results despite tools as sharp as I can make them. Often the heel of my V chisel drags around curves.  I may not be sharpening them right.

That is very very nicely done.  I see that the stock has only a very small amount of curl/figure.  This rifle doesn't need the figure to be beautiful.

Yes, this is one of our Colonial kits.  At it's core, this design has roots in Moravian and Lancaster work, but it has my take on things which has developed over time.

Thanks Dave.  So, on this I stabbed in the outline, including incised regions.  I then came back with a skew chisel used as a knife to open up the lines on the incised areas.  Lately I've been using a v-tool since it is so easy to just pick up one tool, but I too have difficulty getting them to cut well.  It's often a bit of a struggle and I often have to make several cuts on a line to get it right.

Some sort of carving will be available at some point, but it will be a while.

I am in awe at the pictures of the incredible carving I see on this forum. It is so far beyond my capabilities. After much consideration I could not  bring myself to cut into the stock on my Colonial knowing full well what the results would look like. Hopefully someday you will be able to offer CNC carved stocks with your kits for the carving challenged guys like me.

That is very nice Jim. I had to turn my laptop on up on an angle, so I didn't have to crane my neck.  Plain maple does have its advantages when it comes to carving.

Jim's carving also shows the skill of a YOUNG man's hands and YOUNG eyes for detail. For some of us "older folks" our carving is best looked at from a far !!!

Hi Taylor,
You know that is not true in the slightest.  Your work is always a pleasure to see in the clearest light and up close.

What I admire about Jim's body of work is he is an artist in my opinion.  He knows and can execute the traditional styles so well that he can create. recreate, and deviate to his heart and mind's content, and the results just look right.  They also attract the eye like a beacon.  I believe this is true for all of the styles of guns he has created, American and English.  I really hope Jim finds some time to spend on his one-off custom guns at some point.  I remember some of the rifles he posted on ALR in the mid 2000s.  They knocked everyone's socks off.
