Cordage for Accesories?
« on: December 31, 2022, 06:33:35 AM »
What cordage are you all using to attach things like powder measures etc. to your shooting pouches etc.?

I bought some hemp cord of Amazon and it’s trash, super easy to break.

Looking for something durable and traditional looking. Thanks!

I use strips of brain tanned deer hide. It's very strong. Or, heavy linen thread.
Alternatively, you can always make your own cordage. It's not that difficult and You-tube is full of instruction videos

For heavier items like bags and slings, woven linen strapping can be found. I think Susan Wallace at Silver Shuttle Memphis TN has this.
It's not as tightly woven as the old linen was, but still very serviceable. Comes in different widths.
Likely Jas Townsend  and Samson Historical will have similar.

For lighter objects, leather boot laces if oiled and whipped around a post to soften and round them, works very well, or strips cut from veg. tanned leather and greased with deer tallow to take the new off them , work well.

This is the I think 2 inch. doesn't come with the happy little flowers!

You may want to try weaving 3 or 4 strands of smaller linen or hemp together. Run them quickly thru some beeswax.

Braided linen cordage or brain tanned thongs. I cut the brain tan from a circle sort of like a continuous apple peel wider than what is needed then pull and stretch to become longer and thinner. Surprisingly strong.
Experiment and see what works for you.

Cod line would make sense on the New England coast. Linen is the way to go. I make a lot of my own cordage.

How about simple cotton cording?  It's all over Amazon, just do a search.  I have a powder horn that was passed down in my family and it still has the well aged cotton cording on it that was used as a shoulder strap.

I use strips of buckskin that are tapered at the "tie or knot" end.  Sinew works well for very small items like a pan brush or touch hole pick.  Keeping the leather oiled helps defer cracking.

On my first horn I braided light and dark horse tail hair to attach the stopper to the horn. Was still working well when I gave the horn away. I only carried it in the bag for matches so don't know how it would hold up in  field use.

I wonder if your amazon purchase was really hemp and not poor quality jute or sisal - I've read some reviews of rope on their that suggest that not every vendor makes or knows the distinction. Try Walmart's stuff - not pure hemp nor the best quality, really, but readily available and plenty strong within reasonable limits. Hobby Lobby has Hemptique brand twine, IIRC, and while I've never used HL's stuff the rope, twine, and webbing I've bought directly from Hemptique has been excellent quality.

Braided fishing line, 3 or 4 strand braided works well. I'd not use the yellow or red, but the green Sufix would work. I suggest the 30 or 40# to get decent width, but braiding it will
thicken it. At east you won't break it if attached to a stopper ;)

Thanks, gang. I went with leather boot lace from an outfit I bought from before. It’s $#*! for stout and good stuff.
