Hunting bag construction question
« on: January 07, 2023, 09:38:35 PM »
I'm curious how "hair-on" flaps are constructed; is the tanned hide which continues to have hair backed with anything, edged with leather?  Could someone point me to resources which might show how it was -and is - done?

Thanks!

I have an original bag from Hardy County in West Virginia with the flap and front of the pouch tanned with the hair on. Neither have linings or edgings.

Not to say all were made that way, just one example.

Dale, would you consider showing us some pictures of your Hardy Co. pouch. I live in WV and the bags I make are of Appalachia design or style. Original West Virginia pouches are few and far between. Thank You and Kind Regards.

Frank, I posted some pictures a few years ago. Here is a link to the old thread:

Thank you Dale for sending me this link to your Hardy Co. pouch. There are some WV pouches in the Arts and Cultural Center at the Capitol Building in Charleston and some of them have this extra long flap like yours. From what I have seen of Appalachian bags this long flap is quite common. If you ever get a chance to visit there it is well worth the time to look through their collection. Thanks Again and Kind Regards
