Smylee, that is a 12" Rice swamped 50, will use a Kibler Late Ketland with it.

I believe it is american, sourced from this forum, Tom Fornicola. I believe Tom is taking a break from his wood sales right now, he has been righteous in all his dealings with me.

Daryl, funny you should say that! Years ago a crew I was working with made up a bug screen for my truck that said exactly that. I do resemble that remark.

I think it was 1959 when a local restocker of military rifles gave me a piece of walnut,a plank that would make a half stock muzzle loader.It was very good looking and was said to come from Russia and it was a hard piece of
wood.I did make a rifle from it with silver butt plate and trigger guard and I think a single set trigger,maybe.
Bill Large made a 45 caliber barrel for it and after testing it I sold it and the last time I heard about it I think it was in Lexington.I still wish I had devoted more time to wood crafting but if wishes were horses,beggars could ride.

Nice piece of wood. real good chance that's a piece of claro walnut out of California. FWIW, There's not that much available for gunstocks anymore but you can still find a few guys offering it for centerfires and shotguns. I was in a warehouse out there 35 or 40 yrs ago that had over 300 stock blanks, almost all claro, some english, and brought home 5, two of which had curl as tight as a grade 5 maple stock. These were for centerfire custom rifles.

Is it Bastogne? This is often curly and very hard at least the 2 pieces I have used.

I would vote for Claro. I did a rifle a couple years ago with Claro that had to have been from the tree right next to what is shown - color, stripe, figure, all the Claro hallmarks.
