Builder,,,Jack Rush ?
« on: January 25, 2023, 04:57:03 AM »
I recently acquired this rifle. Barrel is marked " W M Large " and is .40 cal, 13/16'' x 42''.
Lock is marked on back plate " W L Cochran  1976 ". LOP is odd, 15 1/4'',
I've found lots of information on Large & Cochran but none on the builder " Jack Rush "
except for under the butt plate. " Jack Rush July-August 1976 for (xxxx) of Holbrook, Iowa ".
Just wondering if anyone has any info on Jack Rush.
Also what style would the rifle be ?

Thanks, John ,,,,,

Thanks, Ezra, It's not a highly embellished work but the craftsmanship is top-notch.
I used to restore late 19th and early 20th-century single-shot rifles and imagined doing
some personal details on it, ie; incised carving, silver inlay, etc. Just imagining, I'd be
more likely to paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa.  ;)
I'm still researching information on the builder, no luck so far. It's a sparker, waiting
for some warmer weather to try it out.

I've been researching images of the different schools and styles of the early builders
to determine what, if any, this rifle would resemble, or maybe it's just the result of the
builder's inspiration. Just wondering if some of the more learned members might have an opinion.
Thanks, John ,,,,

No idea of the style, but I knew Jack and Joanne Rush, and visited and rendezvoused with them often. I imagine Jack just built what he wanted to build. If Jack is still alive, he would have to be in his 80's now.

The lock is an exact copy of the Chet Shoults Ketland and I bought external parts from Mr.Cochran and made locks from them and he did offer an identical left hand lock and I remember making one of them to match the right hand one for a double rifle.Does anyone know who got the moulds for these locks. It can be revived because the mechanisms were cast and are the early style like a Siler/Chambers.
