Finished this Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle last week. First off, let me thank Jim Kibler and crew for making such a great platform for me to work with, and for his advice in achieving the dark stock I was looking for. I forged the patchbox lid and springs, ramrod pipes, toe plate and side plate. Walnut stock stained darker with two applications of my homemade walnut stain, followed by four coats of BLO with bone black mixed in, and 6 more coats of BLO, with the last coat being BLO mixed with turpentine and bees wax. I used repeated applications of brass darkener to get a good brown patina on all the iron parts. I was really happy with the resulting look of the gun. Exactly what I was trying for.

Well thanks Muskrat! I thoroughly enjoyed making this gun, especially making the mounts that I added, but I really have to give a lot of credit to Jim Kibler for turning out such a fine product. I really wanted to make a muzzle cap and put it on , but there is so little wood up there I was afraid I would mess it up. Thanks for your comment and I'm always open to advice.

I've seen pictures of guns made by Hershel House, Steve Davis, and other southern guns that were almost black like that. When I got to handle a Steve Davis rifle a few years ago that had that dark finish, that clinched it for me and I had to try it. Glad I did.

Great looking rifle. Can you share how your home made walnut stain is prepared? Others after a similar look might want to give making some a try. I know I would.

Yessir, it's actually just a water based stain obtained by soaking black walnuts in water for a month or so, then straining it and reducing it down in a pan at a simmer. Since it's water based, it definitely whiskers so I have to lightly sand it, then burnish it with a piece of smooth deer antler before applying the linseed oil finish.

It's been my experience that if you can pick up some from this past fall, the tannin seems to be quite a bit stronger. Good luck, whichever way you go and let me know how it turns out.
P.S. Thoroughly enjoyed your article on restoring the old powder horn.
