Spur on Pistol trigger guard
« on: February 01, 2023, 10:50:01 PM »
I am interested in adding a stabilizing finger spur on a Lyman plains pistol similar in fashion to the finger spur trigger guard on the T/C Patriot, Traditions Trapper and a few upper end Hawken style pistols that I have seen.

My plan is to fashion a spur out of some quality brass that I have and solder it onto the existing trigger guard. There are a couple of factors that I am concerned about with this idea. Is the alloy that Lyman used in their trigger guard going to tolerate this procedure? Also, if damaged there are few and far between spare/replacement parts available for these wonderful toys.

I could create a totally new trigger guard and that is probably what I will do. I have performed extensive searches to find a similar Hawken style trigger guard. All vendors are either backordered or not planning to make more.

Please give me some suggestions as to your experience and advice to proceed with attempting to install a finger spur on my Lyman plains pistol.

Thank you.
Dan

The idea of adding a spur would be my choice. I remember seeing these cast in steel. You might see if the Hawken Shop in Washington has any.
I have a TOW catalog, their last one nd it shows a pistol trigger guard with a spur in both brass and steel.#TG-HP-B or I.
www.trackofthewolf.com or 1-763-633-2500. Good luck.

Thanks Bob. Unfortunately, Neither Track nor the Hawken shop has them at this time.

Make the spur from brass. Fit it very closely to the existing guard.
File both guard and new spur flat where they attach if that makes the joint easier to fit .

Soft solder will do it just fine w/a sweat soldered joint.
A thin joint line of the solder will likely show however.

Hard solder will 'hide' better being a yellow color.
Most hard solders flow around 1100/1200F.
The brass takes another 500F before it melts.

I would fit the parts.
'Tin' the guard portion with the hard solder.
Then flux both surfaces and clamp them into position w/a small C-clamp.
Re-heat till the solder re-melts and flows.
Slightly retighten the clamp  if needed and that's it.
Let it cool on it's own.

File and polish back up to shape when cooled off.

Instead of clamping the spur to the guard for soldering,,you can drill a small dia hole thru both and rivet the two together with a small brass rivet. I use small brass nails w/the head snipped off.
You don't need much countersink on either end. Just enough to hold the parts together for soldering.
Take a small drill bit and give it a twist in the hole by hand. That will give you a counter sink cut for what you need.

BEFORE you assemble and rivit,,place some Flux on both surfaces, Then assemble and rivet.

Add a bit more flux around the joint.
Now heat the assembly. When hot enough, and the solder wire touched to the surfaces, it will flow right into  the joint.
Let it cool as above and clean up the surfaces.

Or a couple of rivets.

^^ This ^^ .   Soldering is certainly an option, but with a couple rivets, you’ll never have any worries about it coming off.     Best,
