I liked Dan's scoring system, after figuring it out.
I suggest a cardboard backer to make scoring outlines easier.
25 yards - rest - any type of bench rest, sitting, standing, kneeling. Shoot offhand if you want. High Score wins.
5 shots total on target face. One in each black "bull". Only the inside line cutters score 6 1X(not 8 1X). End point line cutters score 5pts as shown.
1/2 ball inside to score 5 or more.
The 3-line, line cutters (4 possibilities) will score 6 1X. Maximum possible score is 30 5X.
This should/could be a target to score at least 25 to 27 out of 30. The x's will take care of themselves.

Minus 2 deg here, and cloudy.  I walked out back and shot this target late this afternoon.  25 yards, standing, braced against a tree.  Chambers Siler flintlock, 42 in Colerain .C weight .54 barrel   Single trigger
90 gr FFg, .018 linen patch, bear oil lube, .535 cast ball

Last year, a friend and neighbour on our road  was having a number of difficulties with predators on his small subsistence farm.  Without getting into the politics , obtaining a firearm license in the "Covid" years was even more difficult than normal.
He had expressed an interest in my muzzleloaders etc so., long story short, I spent a couple days working with him and training him, then gifted him my .40 { for those who don't know, a firearms license is not required for a flintlock rifle in Canada]
It is perfect for what he requires, and has put an end to many coyotes, and other varmints.  He was and is extremely appreciative.
I'm now thinking about building another...either a .40 or a .45. We'll see .

Thanks, Richard, and Daryl.  I'll be 70 in a month and a half, and that is a factor when an opportunity arises to share. When my kids were young, spending a large chunk of $ on myself wasn't in the cards. That's why I ended up building my first  rifle. I'm sure you both know what I mean.
The .40 was a good compromise, since it wasn't too small if I happened on something a wee bit larger than expected when walking the woods. I was seriously considering a .45 but now that you've brought up the .36 ??!!   I'll see what barrels are in stock

I did build one kit, (J. Chambers Mark Silver) but any others had to be home made, for the same reasons as yourself.

Daryl, I shot these back on the 5th. Was hoping to get out and shoot more but the weather said NO.
I shot the one on the left first . I was trying to cut the edges and it didn't go well. The only good shot on it was the dot, which was my last shot. Second target I was just trying to get them in the black.
Anyway thought I would post these since I won't be able to go out again due to wind, snow and mud .sometimes all at once.

Finally, a Friday without rain and Marc and I made it to the range. Shot from a rest. Rice .40 square bottom rifling, 42 inch x 7/8 straight barrel. Sixty grains of GOEX FFFG. .390 ball with .018 canvas, Hoppes lube. Really nice spring day with overcast and 72F.

Spring should be just around the corner, but the 2 feet of snow we got yesterday seems to argue with that.
