Screw tip spouts & collars- when do you drill? Added Some Pix TC
« on: February 03, 2023, 02:10:12 AM »
When making horn tip collars and spouts, when do you drill/ream the hole?  What steps and procedure should I employ on the lathe? Or is a drill press used?

Thanks folk.

I guess you could use a drill press but I surely prefer to use a lathe.
I am surely not a whiz at doing screw tip horns, so I will let others more adept at it than I chime in with their responses.

Scott Sibley also put out a book on making southern banded horns.  Believe you can get it from TOTW

I went ahead and removed the posts on the missing file to clean things up.  TC

Thanks Tim, those links are helpful but I haven’t read them all yet.  When I study them I’ll be back with questions.

What I did read it appears that you drill the stock 1st prior to even roughing it out.  I don’t know about the mandrel concept or have one.  Much to learn.

You can rough turn first a piece between centers (you will have to look it over good to find a spot to set it up, it probably is not going to be the center on both ends) to get an accurately drilled hole you will need a chuck. Chuck it up and bring the center on the tailstock up to the indent on the one end, then tighten the chuck, that way you will get a dead center hole. Once drilled it can go on a mandrel and be turned to whatever your looking for.
My ways, I know there are others this just works for me.

Thanks again Tim.  Appears that I need to get pin jaws and a pen mandrel or collet mandrel system.
